South Korea Ski Trip

We went on a ski road trip in South Korea, driving across Gyeonggi-do (경기도), Seoul( 서울) and on to Gangwon-do (강원도).

Doing what the boys wanted to do the most this winter ! Meeting old friends, enjoying traditional Korean cuisine in the local markets, emerge in history, driving to Elysian Gangchon Ski Resort in Gangwon-do for a few days of snowboarding (Dad) and skiing (the boys).

On the trip, the temperatures went below -15C and we had a strange encounter with two naked men out in the snow. Find out more in our video:

Driving in South Korea

In case you are reading this and is planning for a self-drive vacation in South Korea for the first. A few things to note driving in South Korea:

  • Motor vehicles in South Korea are Right Hand Drive (RHD).

  • For foreigners driving in South Korea, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required from your local Automobile Association. For Singapore, this would be AAS and you can have it done in a few minutes at a cost of $20. The IDP typically expires in one year.

  • Watch out for speed limits that may change frequently on the same road. They could drop from 100km, to 80km or 60km, as you drive on the highway going through a town.

  • On major roads in the city, it is common to find that the leftmost lanes are reserved for U-turns.

  • Google Maps navigation does not work well in South Korea. You would want to use Naver Map which worked flawlessly for us, with turn-by-turn voice prompts, junction views, live traffic condition and speed alerts.

  • Always drive safely, be polite and give way to other road users. :)

Elysian Gangchon Ski Resort

If you're not planning to drive in South Korea, Elysian Gangchon is the only ski resort that is accessible by the subway. The ITX-Cheongchun line operates during the winter season.

The ski slopes on the Elysian Gangchon Ski Resort is opened during the ski season which may vary from year to year. Always check their website for the latest information which is available in English. However, there are rather limited English information on site at the ski resort.

Ski Rates

The ski lift pass rates varies greatly from day to day. While we were there, the daily rates were printed on an A4 paper written in Hangul only. If you see an A4 paper pasted on the window, it is probably it. We paid between 20,000 and 40,000 KRW each day for a 4-hour pass during our one week stay.

If you are a beginner and is not using the lifts, you are free to use the beginner slopes at no costs. However, always observe basic ski etiquette and not to obstruct the slopes as you go about practising or taking selfies.

Ski and snowboard gears are available for rental at Elysian Gangchon. Alternatively, you can buy or rent them from the nearby Gangchon village where there are many ski shops offering a variety of clothing and equipment.
